Can't Check Voice Mail on My Verizon Phone

by Mandy Slake

There are two ways to call voice mail from a Verizon Wireless phone. If you're dialing voice mail by holding down a shortcut key, the number the phone dials to access the voice mail is usually stored in the phone settings. Dial your full phone number instead. If the voice mail box is working properly, it will start playing your greeting. Press the "#" key to interrupt the voice mail and enter your voice mail passcode. If you can reach voice mail by dialing the number, check the phone's manual for instructions on how to change the voice mail access number.

When you call voice mail from a Verizon landline phone, you must dial an access number. If you're calling from your Verizon phone, the system will pick up your number from your caller ID. If you're calling from another line, you must enter your phone number. After the system has received your number, it prompts you for your passcode. Have the correct access number. If you have a Verizon FiOS line, the access number is always 888-234-6786. If you have a copper wire land line, the voice mail access number is in the documentation you received, but you can also view it by logging in to your account on verizon.com.

You can reset your

voice mail passcode over the phone or on the My Verizon website. To reset the password over the phone for Verizon Wireless numbers, dial "*611" from your cellular phone. Select the option to reset the voice mail passcode from the main menu and follow the prompts. For Verizon landline phones, the customer care number varies depending on your location. Go to verizon.com and click the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page, and then click "Call Us." To reset your passcode online, navigate to verizonwireless.com or verizon.com and log in to your My Verizon account. Click "Home" and "More Actions" under the I Want To menu. Click "Change Voice Mail Password."

If the voice mail system doesn't respond when you dial your passcode using a cellular or touch-tone phone, enable the DTMF setting on the phone. DTMF settings send the sound of the button press down the line. The voice mail system determines which key you pressed by listening for the sound. If DTMF settings are off, the phone never transmits the sound of the key press to the voice mail system. You can usually find them somewhere in the Settings menu on your phone. If you receive other error messages, contact Verizon customer care at *611 or 800-922-0204 for Verizon Wireless, or call your local customer care for Verizon residential.
